Extended Business Description
NorthWestern Corp. engages in generating and distributing electricity and natural gas to the Upper Midwest and Northwest customers in Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska. NorthWestern operates through three segments: Electric Operations, Natural Gas Operations and Other. The Electric Operations segment includes generation, transmission and distribution of electric utility business as a vertically integrated generation transmission and distribution utility in Montana and South Dakota. The company also provides sales of electricity to resellers, primarily including power pools or other utilities. The Natural Gas Operations segment distributes natural gas to customers in Montana communities. It also contract for firm natural gas storage services to meet the heating season and peak day requirements of its natural gas customers and maintains and operates one propane-air gas peaking unit. The Other segment primarily consists of a remaining unregulated natural gas contract, the wind down of its captive insurance subsidiary and unallocated corporate costs. It also serves smaller distribution companies that provide service to customers. NorthWestern was founded in November 1923 and is headquartered in Sioux Falls, SD.
